When we think about inspiration, we often imagine big, life-changing moments—a powerful speech, an unforgettable experience, a breakthrough idea. But sometimes, the most profound insights come from ordinary moments we might otherwise overlook.
The Cost of Constant Doing
In the busyness of the corporate environment, it’s easy to get caught up in the deluge of doing—the never-ending task list, new projects, managing workloads, helping customers, keeping clients happy, leading teams, attending meetings, and constantly being “on.”
At the end of the day, I’d be wiped out—only to do a little more work before bed and then wake up early to start all over again.
With so much doing, it was hard to be fully present—to truly notice what was happening around me. I moved through my day at full speed, constantly chasing the next task, feeling productive but disconnected. Moments passed by with little thought registering or connections made.
And I see this pattern in my coaching clients as well. It’s part of that world.
But here’s what I’ve learned: We can choose to create the space necessary for noticing.
The Power of Small Moments
We often think that transformation comes from major events—a promotion, a career shift, a big decision. But in reality, most transformation happens over time, through small intentional changes.
And transformation requires one thing first: stillness.
The noisy distractions of the day—the constant meetings, deadlines, and digital clutter—keep us from noticing the things we need in order to grow. But when we create space to reflect, we start to see:
✔ What did I take away from this encounter?
✔ What did I notice about myself and others in this meeting?
✔ How can I do more (or less) of that?
This is where growth happens.
Journaling your thoughts and observations throughout the day gives meaning and insight to what might otherwise feel like routine work. It shifts your mindset from:
❌ Checking things off the list → ✅ Learning and evolving from experiences.
At the end of each week, take a few minutes to review your reflections:
📌 What am I walking away with about myself and others?
📌 How am I changing?
📌 What patterns do I see emerging?
Then, zoom out. Look at your insights over a month, then a quarter, then a year.
Transformation isn’t about what you do once—it’s about what you notice, reflect on, and integrate over time.
1. Pause to Notice
Throughout the day, take small moments to ask: What just happened here? What can I take from this?
2. Journal Your Observations
Keep a running list of small lessons learned—about yourself, your leadership, and your team.
3. Review & Reflect
At the end of each week, pull together your notes. What stands out? How are you shifting over time?
4. Turn Insights into Action
Reflection is only valuable if it leads to Choose one thing to improve or reinforce in the coming week.
Your Turn: What Have You Noticed Lately?
Think back on the past week—was there a small, unexpected moment that taught you something?
Here’s to noticing, reflecting, and transforming—one moment at a time.
