Why Delegation Still Feels Heavy

You’ve delegated the task.

So why does it still feel like you’re carrying it?

On paper, they’ve handed things off.

checking in constantly,
reviewing every detail,
answering follow-up questions,
and mentally tracking whether the work is getting done.

The irony is that the very strengths that helped you succeed can also make it harder to create capacity.

When Delegation Isn’t Complete

A good rule of thumb:

If the work is off your task list but still occupying your mind, you haven’t fully delegated it.

That doesn’t mean you walk away and hope for the best.

It means you create clear expectations, provide the right support, and allow the other person to own the result.

That ownership is where confidence and capability grow.

A Simple Way to Delegate More Effectively

The next time you hand something off, clarify three things:

  1. What outcome are we trying to achieve?
  2. What decisions does this person own?
  3. When and how will we check in?

Then resist the urge to step back in unless it is truly needed.

This may feel uncomfortable at first.

That’s normal.

You’re not just changing how work gets done.

You’re changing how you lead.

What Happens When You Truly Let Go

When ownership is clear:

  • you create more capacity,
  • your team grows,
  • accountability improves,
  • and work stops flowing through you.

That’s when delegation becomes a leadership tool rather than a source of stress.
