Have you ever noticed that choosing intentional growth is hard? Not just because it requires effort, but because it often means going against the grain.
Saying yes to self-growth sometimes means saying no to what’s easy, comfortable, or expected. It takes courage to:
✔ Prioritize yourself when others are pulling you in different directions.
✔ Set boundaries to protect your time and energy.
✔ Step into the unknown, even when doubt creeps in.
I’ve faced this struggle myself.
I really wanted to attend a spiritual growth program at my church. The speaker was fascinating, and I knew it would challenge me to grow—not just spiritually, but as the person I’m called to be. It would give me the space to reflect on how I show up in my relationships and life. I was excited about it.
But then work stepped in.
I scrambled all week, trying to get ahead so I could take Saturday off and attend guilt-free. But by Friday, I felt the familiar pull of work. If I worked on Saturday, I’d get ahead. I wouldn’t disappoint anyone. Maybe someone would notice me. Could this help in my review?
By Saturday morning, I had talked myself out of going. I convinced myself that the work project was my priority.
And just like that, I traded personal growth for external validation.
The Fear Behind Intentionality
Sometimes, we avoid being intentional not because we don’t know what to do, but because of what it means:
- If I focus on this, will I have to let go of something else?
- If I step into this growth, will it change how others see me?
- If I give my all and still fail, then what?
These fears are real—but they don’t have to define us.
The truth? Work will always be there. The demands, expectations, and opportunities to prove yourself will never go away. But the opportunities to grow into the person you’re meant to be? Those moments require intention.
