Taking Stock of Your Year

As fall settles in, it’s a natural season to pause and take stock. The year may have flown by, but before we shift into the final stretch, it’s worth asking: What have I learned? Where have I grown?

We often underestimate the value of reflection. Yet, by naming our wins, challenges, and growth edges, we sharpen our focus for the months ahead. Reflection helps us celebrate what’s working, refine what’s not, and prepare ourselves to finish the year with intention.

By taking the time to name our experiences honestly, we have a greater propensity to move forward rather than tread water. It allows us to take all our experiences and turn them into the next actions that propel us from here. These three areas of reflection are key in that transformation:

  • Taking a moment to celebrate steps forward is essential—it’s progress, not perfection. Ask yourself: What are some areas where I took one step forward that made a difference or brought me closer to my goal? How do I know? What did I see in myself and in others? What momentum does this create moving forward? What does it make possible?
  • We all suffer setbacks. What got in the way? Name it. Describe it. What contributed to it becoming an obstacle? By acknowledging it, we can ask: What could I do differently next time? How might I prepare so it doesn’t block me again?
  • Growth Edges. These are the opportunities hiding in plain sight. Consider: What did I learn about myself, my role, or my leadership this year? Who is the leader I am becoming? What places need attention to move me closer to the leader I want to be?

This type of reflection builds clarity, resilience, and momentum. It turns experience into insight and insight into intentional action.

Here’s to finishing strong.

1.  What’s one win you’re most proud of so far this year?

2. Where did you encounter unexpected challenges?

3. What systems, habits, or supports helped you succeed?

4. Where do you need to refine your focus?
