Dad was a huge railroad and model railroad enthusiast. He read about trains and their history. He watched train videos, enjoying the beauty of the scenery they passed on their mission. He loved to learn and discover the details of the industry and railroad lines.
He was meticulous when working on a model train layout. Each tree, each car, each sign needed the right color, texture, and dimension. I would notice the focus and attention as he placed each tree and bush to create the right landscape effect. I remember his lessons on the right technique to achieve “weathering” on a building or train car.
I marveled at the patience he had. He had tools to magnify his work to ensure that the details of each item contributed to the beauty of the whole. Each unique element was important.
When I was younger, I thought it was about doing a good job and doing things right. I now appreciate that it was so much more. It was a recipe to stay centered and live life more fully.
It didn’t matter how much time it took. It was about enjoying the journey. His beaming face upon completion of a 2″x 2″ square of landscaping or one train car said it all. Giving full attention to every element made for an outstanding result.
Lesson: Focusing and being present on the journey allows for the best possible outcome. So, slow down and enjoy the moments. If you do, the results will take care of themselves.

- BE INTENTIONAL – put time for them on your calendar – what’s more important than that?
